Lots of fun this week in the classroom having it be Halloween! I dressed up as a football. Kids loved it and appreciated my effort of trying to put a costume together! My cooperating teacher put together an Halloween themed escape room for her classroom in the afternoon well me and my partner Sydney were there. She split the classroom in half for this and me and my partner took responsibility for one of the groups and did the escape room with them and then we sat in a different room with them and watched a Halloween documentary well the other group was working on the escape room. This was nice as I was alone with the kids and got to build relationships with them. I had the kids telling me I was the best teacher ever even though I'm not a teacher yet by the end of the day what was nice especially coming from a 7/8 older group. At the end of the day we joined our cooperating teachers Grade one class that I sat in last week to read and colour with her kids. This placement with this group is kind of making me wonder if I really wanna stick with that K-5 Group or if I want to do older.
My group of children in my classroom is very diverse, all the students are from different backgrounds. We have a few refugees in our class. They're all super outgoing and get along great with their classmates and socialize amazing. Everyone in the school is different but all really seem to come together and its nice to see. These students all have different lives and some are having a harder time then others, but it seems when they're at school it kind of all fades away with their peers around and its nice to see. I've really been learning a lot through this experience, no just about kids but myself as well and always look forward to what next week brings and curious to how my mind will sway with where I want to end up teaching.

This week at Elsie Murnock School my cooperation teacher placed us in different classrooms for a period. She had me sit in her friends grade 1 class. This age group was very eager to volunteer and pretty involved in their learning. Kids adapted to me quickly and weren't afraid to ask me for help.
This Week are cooperating teacher had her class use power point to get her class to promote the knowledge their presentation to their classmates through a slide show. She gave us the chance to assess their presentations what I feel we did a fair job of as our marks of the children were very similar to the teachers. We also stood in front of the class and gave a little talk on importance of presentations and how they're hugely used in high school. Seems that as the kids get older a lot of teachers rely on slide shows to presentation their lessons as well as to get the children to give their presentation. What's fair as its very easy to put together and presentations is a key skill that the kids need to learn. The teachers build their professional knowledge off previous experiences I feel. If something doesn't work they stop doing it that way or make adjustments or just strictly find a new way of doing things. Our teacher really promotes her knowledge by telling the kids everything she's teaching has a purpose and that their going to come across it in high school and prepping them for that. Ecole Elsie Mironuck Community school has a very unique atmosphere having, both French immersion and English schooling offered. This school has been expanded multiple times. I was in a room with two teachers sitting in on their meeting talking about strategies to help a student out and working on something called “Record of Adaption” What was very neat and I found it interesting how intrigued the teachers were on making things work for individual students and working very closely with parents and with each other as teachers what really showed a sense of how they work together as a community. Anyways in this room had 4 different types of bricks in which were all additional building to the school itself what I found quite interesting. Really showed a depth for how much the school has grown.
When this school first opened in 1962 it was under a different name of Sherwood school. It originally was very small with just 8 classrooms but over the years the school has been renovated in 1964 and 1968 to add more classrooms with their schools growth, totaling 22 classrooms. The schools name was changed in 1987 after Principal Miss Mironuck retired after 15 years at Sherwood school. Named in her honour. The people in my school are very diverse, lots of cultures, religions and kids from all over the place. The school does have a fair amount of refugees. A lot of the kids need some extra “loving”. A lot of the kids got stuff going on their lives that distract them from in school but the teachers work greatly with them and their home to make sure their doing their best in school and showing up to class. The staff at the school are all very welcoming and always give a friendly smil and hey in the hallways. Staff seem to be happy with us their creating a very welcoming community and its very nice to feel apart of them. Look forward to what next week has to bring, Halloween and we get to dress up. No idea what to be, any suggestions? 😊 My placement is with a 7/8 split. The Kids I'm with are all very diverse and there is a lot of them that have a lot going on in their lives right now, and you can get a good hint at that with the way the act. The teacher in my placement is pretty great with the children and has found a way to really interact with each child so I look forward to observing her tactics in the classroom with these children.
She gave us a wise remark that children wont respond to yelling, so its important to keep a chill like tone with the children and I really saw that when we went into the classroom. When we had first arrived our teacher has a prep so she talked to us for a bit on what to expect and what not then put us into her kids classroom well they were in their music class. The music teacher seemed to raise her voice towards the children quite often and it was pretty obvious she didn't have the attention of the classroom and the kids didn't react to her the same way. The kids seemed to kind of egg her on and disrespect her a bit so really gave me the idea that first impressions as a teacher are very important on how a year with children in your classroom will go to then carry on into future years. The kids all seemed to like me what makes me happy. They were very interested in me and enjoyed chatting with me. I really look forward to what next week brings. |
